In the remote Arctic town of Salekhard, archaeologists stumbled upon the well-preserved mummy of a young boy, believed to be around six or seven years old at the time of his death during the 12th or 13th century. A Burial Rich in Oddities
Nestled within copper and bark, the mummy was interred deep in Siberian permafrost, which ensured its remarkable preservation. Among the unusual items discovered alongside the child were a bronze axe, sharp instruments, and a bear-shaped metal pendant, leaving archaeologists scratching their heads.
Researcher Natalia Fyodorova from the Russian Academy of Sciences pointed out that this burial significantly differed from others found in the region. “Other children were placed in wooden sarcophagi, but here we uncovered an oval wooden structure. Another distinction is the abundance of items buried with this child – an axe, pendant, bronze rings. This is quite atypical.”

The team of specialists believes that these findings imply the boy may have belonged to a royal or affluent family within this elusive ancient society. Further investigation of the site uncovered 34 additional ancient corpses, 11 of which exhibited signs of severe violence, including fractured skulls and broken bones, indicating that this lost civilization was likely engaged in fierce conflicts.
