Discovering the “Men of Rock” in Mersin, Turkey
In the southern province of Mersin, Turkey, the archaeological site known as Adamkayalar, or “Men of Rock,” showcases ancient artistry and cultural importance. These extraordinary rock reliefs, carved into the slopes of the Şeytan Deresi Canyon, provide a fascinating window into history. Unfortunately, this invaluable heritage is now under threat from treasure hunters.
An Uncommon Archaeological Treasure
Adamkayalar is far from an ordinary historical site. Its scale, artistry, and narrative depth make it a notable discovery, both in Turkey and globally. The site consists of two primary areas:
- Rock reliefs in the Devil Creek Valley
- Remnants of castles, fortifications, and settlements in the northeastern section
Featuring 19 figures across 9 niches, the reliefs illustrate various scenes, such as farewell ceremonies, celebrations, and symbolic imagery. These carvings are thought to honor the kings and queens of the ancient Olba state, providing critical insights into their burial customs and cultural practices.
An Urgent Call for Protection
Professor Murat Durukan, the head of the Archaeology Department at Mersin University, highlights the site’s significance: “Adamkayalar is as important as the Nemrut and Göbeklitepe regions.” He urgently advocates for its recognition as an archaeological site and stresses the need for immediate protective measures and development efforts.
From Hidden Gem to Tourist Destination
Situated just 60 kilometers west of Mersin city, Adamkayalar possesses great potential as a tourist attraction. Durukan recommends implementing security features, including cameras and lighting systems, to enhance the site’s appeal. “If we act promptly, both Mersin and Anatolia could benefit from a new tourism hotspot,” he asserts.
The Impending Danger
Despite its historical importance and potential as a tourist site, Adamkayalar is facing significant threats from treasure hunters. In 2015, parts of the area were vandalized by people searching for nonexistent treasures. This misguided quest jeopardizes the ancient reliefs, risking irreversible damage or destruction.
