In an extraordinary archaeological discovery, Turkish researchers have uncovered a 1,700-year-old Roman ringstone featuring the goddess Athena at the ancient site of Assos. This find not only illuminates the religious customs of the city but also provides a tangible connection to its rich history.
Assos: A City Rich in Myth and Heritage
Located in the southwestern region of the Biga Peninsula in present-day Turkey, Assos has a historical lineage that dates back to the Bronze Age. According to legend, the city was established by Methymnians from Lesbos in the 7th century BC. Athena, the daughter of Zeus and one of the twelve Olympian deities, was honored as the city’s guardian.
The Excavation: Nearly Four Decades of Commitment
For almost 40 years, Turkish archaeologists have been diligently excavating the site of Assos. The current team, led by Professor Nurettin Arslan from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, comprises twenty devoted members. Their efforts receive backing from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and İÇDAŞ.
A Symbol of Importance: The Athena Ringstone
Professor Arslan expressed his enthusiasm about the discovery, stating, “We found a significant ringstone within the Ksenedochion structure. It portrays Athena, the principal goddess of the city, standing. While such stones were prevalent during the Roman era, they were utilized both before and afterward. We believe it was owned by a notable citizen and functioned as a seal.”
Dating the Find
The ringstone is thought to date back to the 2nd or 3rd century AD, rendering it approximately 1,600 to 1,700 years old. “In ancient times, these seals served a similar purpose to our modern signatures, helping to identify individuals,” explained Arslan.
Assos Through Time: From Bronze Age to Ottoman Era
The discovery of the Athena ringstone represents just one episode in Assos’ extensive and diverse history. The city has been under various rulers, including the Lydians, Persians, Alexander the Great, and his successors. It thrived during Roman domination in the first and second centuries AD before ultimately coming under Ottoman rule in 1330.
