Discovering a Wealth of Burials in the Nile Delta
In the Kom Al-Khelgan area of the Daqahliya governorate, nestled within the fertile Nile Delta, archaeologists have uncovered an impressive array of 110 tombs from various historical periods, including Boto I and II, Naqada III, and the Second Intermediate Period. This significant find provides a fascinating insight into the burial customs and rich history of ancient Egyptian civilizations.
Tombs from the Boto Eras
Among the discoveries, 68 tombs are attributed to the Boto I and II periods, showcasing rounded and oval-shaped burials that contain the skulls and skeletal remains of individuals. These bodies were meticulously positioned on their left side, which was a common practice of that era. Moreover, excavations revealed a touching sight: the remains of newborns interred within clay pots.
Naqada III and Second Intermediate Period Tombs
The excavation site also revealed five tombs from the Naqada III period and 37 tombs from the Second Intermediate Period. The latter are characterized by their rectangular shape, with depths varying between 20 to 85 centimeters, illustrating the changing burial customs of that time. Notably, some of these tombs included clay sarcophagi designated for young children.
Funerary Artifacts and Treasures
In addition to the tombs, a rich variety of funerary artifacts was found, offering valuable insights into the rituals and beliefs of these ancient cultures. The discoveries included rounded and oval clay pots, holders, stelae, amulets, and scarabs crafted from faience, embellished with intricate designs typical of their respective periods. Tools made of stone and flint knives were also found, enhancing the archaeological significance of this site.
