The Titanic’s Whistles: Echoes from the Depths Sounded Again

The Titanic’s Whistles: Echoes from the Depths Sounded Again

Did you know that the Titanic’s iconic steam whistles were recovered and sounded again, decades after the ship’s fateful sinking? Like her sister ships, the Titanic was fitted with a set of “Hyson” steam whistles on each of her four funnels. Interestingly, only the whistles on the #1 and #2 funnels were functional, while those on the #3 and #4 funnels served solely decorative purposes.

Discovery of the Whistles

In 1993, during a salvage expedition led by R.M.S. Titanic Inc., these legendary whistles were discovered in the ship’s debris field, located just behind the Titanic’s bow section. The whistles were the only identifiable remains of what was once the #2 funnel, having been buried on the ocean floor for 81 years. Remarkably, they were recovered intact and underwent careful conservation and stabilization efforts.

A Historic Exhibition

Following their restoration, these whistles became a centerpiece of an R.M.S. Titanic Inc. exhibit in St. Paul, Minnesota, in early 1999. After decades of silence, the whistles were heard once more, this time using low-pressure compressed air to preserve their condition. The emotional highlight came on February 21, 1999, when Millvina Dean, the last living survivor of the Titanic, then 87 years old, was invited to pull the cord. At 4:05 PM, the deep, resonant sound of the “Voice of Titanic” filled the air, echoing for the first time in 87 years.
