Ancient Silver Phalera Unearthed by Volunteer Archaeologists
A group of dedicated volunteer archaeologists has made an extraordinary find at the Vindolanda Roman fort in northern England. They have uncovered a 1,900-year-old silver military decoration known as a phalera, shedding light on the Roman army’s esteemed award system.
The Importance of Vindolanda
Vindolanda, situated just south of Hadrian’s Wall, is recognized as one of Europe’s premier Roman archaeological sites. This historic fort complex consists of nine successive forts built one atop another and once accommodated soldiers from various regions of the Roman Empire, including Belgium, Germany, and France.
